There are several ways of doing this, one is to think of the total garden as one big rectangle and the area enclosed by the walk as a smaller rectangle and take the latter area away from the former, ie.

Area(Garden)= length*width = 30*20 = 600ft2

To find the smaller area, take the width of the walk away from the length and width of the garden twice, so

Area(Garden - Path)= (30-4)*(20-4) = 26*16 = 416ft2

Then the area of the walk must be 600-416 = 184ft2

given length and width is, 30 and 20

walk around the width is,2ft

so walk around the width is increasing the length and width  so,2+2=4ft

so area of walk around the park is,(34*24)-(30*20)=816-600=216 sqft

Alternatively imagine the walk split into four rectangles, two along each length and two along the remaining width,  so we have

Area(walk)= Area(2 'length' rectangles)+Area(2 'width' rectangles) = 2*30*2 + 2*16*2  = 184ft2
