The "contact function" in linguistics is a technical term applied to the applications of language that allow us to open, hold and end conversations with other members of our species for the purposes of, inter alia, organising, influencing and gathering information. 

If I were you I would take a look at Jakobson. I have put some links in the references. He talks about functions of language one of which is the Phatic Function - otherwise, I believe, known as the Contact Function.
