Medical Ethics

Case Study 1
• Donated gametes-sperm and ova-are used in fertility treatments for patients who are unable to produce their own
• It is much easier, for obvious reasons, to donate sperm than ova
• Donated ova are very scarce
• During fetal development, females lay down a lifetime’s supply of oocytes (egg cells)
• It has therefore been suggested that aborted female fetuses or female corpses may be used to supply oocytes/ova for fertility treatment
Question: Do you approve or disapprove of this idea? What are your reasons?
