When to use the subjunctive in Spanish?

I am a bit confused by when to use the subjunctive in Spanish. Is there an easy way of remembering this? It seems the times you need it are when you are referring to something that may not exist, and when you are asking someone to do something or when you are not sure when something will happen. I'm sure there must be some rule for remembering all this.
